This months winner My skin is very blotchy and uneven with melasma, mostly on my jaw under my cheek bones. What is the best way to cover it up. I haven't had a lot of sucess with other products.

joanna_schlip says

Hi!  You are not along - melasma and skin discoloration plagues so many, which is why Physicians Formula has done extensive research on color correction and skin perfection.  I would recommend starting with a primer - Mineral Wear Correcting Primer is a minimalist formula and provides the ideal base for all other makeup.  What's more, it is offered in shades that actually counteract the blemishes or discolorations in skin - green hues counteract redness, yellow works against dark or purplish hues, and peach smoothes and evens overall skin tone.  A layer of primer before applying the rest of your face is sometimes all it takes.  If you need some extra coverage, spot treat with a correcting concealer, or tote a multi-hued correcting powder (like Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Powder) for touchups on the go.  Hope this helps!

Marina asks

This months winner I am an academic in a field in which women generally wear little to no makeup. Yet I enjoy wearing it and think it evens out my complexion. For someone who wants a natural look, what do you suggest?

joanna_schlip says

Yes, a pulled together, even toned and natural look is essential for women in any career in my book.  I would suggest a tinted moisturizer or a loose powder foundation for lightweight coverage and to even tone.  Organic Wear 100% Origin Tinted Moisturizer or Mineral Wear Talc Free Airbrushing Loose Powder SPF 30 are good ones to try.  Undereye concealer and light mascara are also totally acceptable - this will make you appear alert, vibrant and healthy.  Use a product like Concealer Twins 2-in-1 Correct & Cover Cream Concealer by using the yellow tone to eliminate dark circles and the light tone to cover and conceal.

kristalpicasso asks

This months winner I'm just starting out using makeup what is the order in which I need to apply products and which ones. I do have redness on my cheeks and chin along with red acne scars.

joanna_schlip says

I would suggest that you begin with a primer such as the Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Primer in Green.  The soft green shade works to color-correct imperfection and redness while smoothing skin's texture.  It also promotes longer makeup wear.  I then use concealer (peach to conceal darkness and undereye circles, green for redness and natural skin tone for other imperfections) and next foundation.  The Mineral Wear Talc-Free Airbrushing Loose Powder SPF 30 is a good choice, the ultra-fine mineral powder delivers impeccable coverage for a flawless airbrushed finish.  Use the densely packed applicator it comes with to build coverage and cover hard to reach areas like around the nose, under eyes, etc.

FrangiePani asks

This months winner Can someone over 44 wear PF's Soft Glow, Radiant Glow, or Glamorous Glow bronzers? Or are they better off with just using matte bronzers? What bronzer finish is most appropriate for those over 40?

joanna_schlip says

Hi!  Of course - absolutely!  Bronzers in my opinion are appropriate for all ages, and a glistening or illuminating bronzer is great for skin over 40 because it imparts a healthy radiance and glow to skin while evening out skin tone.  Check out the bronzer tutorial video for some helpful hints and good luck!

Shortyjane asks

This months winner I would LOVE to wear the smoky eye, with actual color...not always just "browns". I always feel like it looks like too much, any ideas on how to make it look good without too much?

joanna_schlip says

Absolutely - the Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Shadow & Liner Palettes are great for this  because they offer a variety of colors to experiment with, but you can take advantage of recommended eye color palette shades to help guide you in the right direction.  If you're looking for a bold statement, try the new Eye Candy or POP Collections.  It's also wet and dry application for two finishes - wet them for intense drama with long lasting wear.  Use the most slender hued plan as a colorful liner (the bottom shade in each trio.)  Good luck!

nursedebbie05 asks

This months winner Hello Joanna! I am 37 years young dealing with Rosacea and brown spots. Please tell me what will help me to look healthy and beautiful again! Thanks so much!!

joanna_schlip says

So many of my clients complain about this very problem.  When this happens, I  break out my Mineral Correcting Concealer trios to fix the problem(s).  Use the soft yellow to cover the brown spots and the green shade to correct red imperfections like Rosacea.  Then dab the light natural concealer on top to create a natural looking finish and set concealer with loose powder for long lasting wear.

sgoff asks

This months winner I have the worse darkness under my eyes and inner corner. I have tried tons of concealers. What does PF have to offer--I am not familiar with your products--and what is the best way to use it?

joanna_schlip says

As a professional makeup artist that deals with all sorts of skin issues for the red carpet, one of our best kept makeup artist secrets is color correction.  That goes for redness and blemishes as well as dark circles and blueish imperfections.  For the latter, and to address your dark circles, I'd suggest using a soft yellow concealer to mask the problem.  Physicians Formula has two great offerings that specifically address this problem.  First being Concealer Twins 2-in-1 Correct & Cover Cream Concealer.  One end houses the corrective concealer and the other a light, flesh tone to go over as the final step for flawless skin.  Also, Mineral Wear Mineral Correcting Concealer with three concealers conveniently attached to use together or take one on the go.  The added pink shade illuminates and highlights.  Check out some helpful tips with this video too!

This months winner Hi Joanna, Tara here, wondering if I emphasize my eyes do I DE-emphasize my lips and vice versa? or do those rules no longer apply? What is a good combination eye shadow and lip color for m? ? Thanks

joanna_schlip says

Hi Tara - I think it's always a good rule of thumb to choose one feature to accent, especially for every day life, so if you're going for a bold eye, a more neutral lip works best. And, if you are wearing a deeper color on your lips I'd suggest a more subdued eye.  There are always exceptions, of course!  As for a great color for you, with your hazel eyes and fairer skin I'd suggest Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Shadow & Liner, Smoky Collection, for Hazel eyes.  I really really love the Shimmer Strips palettes and the Smoky collection has colors that will allow you to play up your eyes, or keep them understated but still finished.  Pair that with Plump Potion™ Needle-Free Lip Plumping Cocktail in Nude, Misty Rose, or Berry. Nude's a great every day color, as is Misty Rose, and the Berry works if you want to accent your lip a bit more.  Have fun!

rebeccakelsey asks

This months winner I have a hard time covering up my under eye circles. Do you have any tips?

joanna_schlip says

Hi Rebecca!  Undereye circles are no fun, but they can be covered.  The first step is to choose the right shade of concealer.  Even though it might seem like a strange color to put on your skin, yellow is the right color to cover dark circles (and green is perfect to cover red imperfections).  One of my favorite products is Physicians Formula Mineral Wear® Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Concealer.  Dot the yellow shade on the area that's darker - use about 3 dots to start since you can always add more.  Blend with your finger tip.  Then dot the flesh toned shade onto the same area and blend.  Use the highlighting shade as needed. Watch my technique on the video and let me know if you have any more questions!

alileila asks

This months winner Hey Joanna, I am a redhead with SUCH fair skin that it's so hard to find the right makeup and tools to apply so that I don't end up with an orange jawline. HELP!

joanna_schlip says

Hi Ali - have you ever tried mineral makeup? The reason I suggest it for you is that the coverage is so natural and easy to blend.  Physicians Formula Mineral Wear® Talc-Free Mineral Illuminating Powder Duo SPF 16 (you should try the translucent/light shade).  What's especially good is that this product has two shades in one so it's really easy to blend to the right shade.  And never, ever stop at your jawline!  You should blend the color down onto your throat so that you don't end up with a sudden demarcation line -- but with this powder you should easily be able to blend to avoid that.
